RABBI EPHRAIM Z. BUCHWALD

Rabbi BuchwaldRabbi Ephraim Buchwald is one of the leaders in the movement of Jewish return. He has pioneered many of the most dramatic and effective outreach programs in this country. Rabbi Buchwald was ordained by Yeshiva University where he was a student of Rabbi Dr. J.B. Soloveitchik.

From 1973 through 1987 he was the Director of Education at Lincoln Square Synagogue in New York where he also developed and coordinated the congregation's dynamic outreach program. In 1975 he established the now renowned Beginners Service, a special Shabbat service for people with little or no synagogue experience.

In July of 1987, Rabbi Buchwald launched the National Jewish Outreach Program, an organization that has had a dramatic impact on the Jewish world. In North America alone, over 1,115,000 Jews have been reached by NJOP programs. As record numbers of Jews walk away from Jewish life out of ignorance and assimilation, Rabbi Buchwald hopes that by providing American Jews with a positive, joyous encounter with Judaism, NJOP will be able to turn the tide of Jewish life in America.

Rabbi Buchwald, who also served as founding President of the Association for Jewish Outreach Professionals, has lectured widely and led experiential programs in many cities in the United States and Canada.

In May 2001, Rabbi Buchwald was given an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters by Yeshiva University in recognition of his pioneering outreach work.

A fine scholar, teacher and writer, he is known for his straight talk, forthright style and lively wit.

He and his wife Aidel, are the proud parents of four children, and a growing number of grandchildren.

THE THEME: "TO GROW AS A JEW"

Our tradition subscribes to the belief that the soul of every Jew who ever lived or will live was present at the revelation of the Torah at Mount Sinai some 3,300 years ago. The experience at Mount Sinai united the individuals of Israel into one people and endowed every Jew with a spark of eternity.

As the Jew matures and gains sophistication, there exists the hope that he/she will grow, not only in the ways of the world, but also in the ways of Torah. And, in our day, more than any other in recent generations, increasing numbers of our people are looking to Jewish tradition as a vehicle for self enhancement. At the same time ironically, many Jews, even those with rich Day School and Yeshiva backgrounds are becoming more and more casual about their religion. They too, often look for a deeper sense of the spiritual in their tradition, but fail to find it.

Join us as we investigate the world of growing as a Jew -- the dynamics of prayer, the worth of our souls, and what we can expect from our spiritual relationships.
